For every takeaway I’ll share what David Mamet wrote in his book and then tell you my thoughts on it. Here’s what was written:

‘In “real life”, the mother begging for her child’s life, the criminal begging for a pardon, the atoning lover pleading for one last chance- these people give no attention whatever to their own state, and all attention to the state of that person from whom they require their object. This outward-directedness brings the actor in ”real life” to a state of magnificent responsiveness and makes his progress thrilling to watch.’

I feel like this piece of advice is taught in acting all the time, but this was the first time it actually stuck with me, or at least the first time I actually understood what was meant by it.

In a scene, you don’t want to be focussing on what you look like and thinking about how you’ll respond next. You should have your attention with the other person. How are they responding? What do you want from them?

You, as your character, have a certain goal, for example: get an apology out of the other person. Take this goal seriously and don’t leave the stage without fighting for it.

This might be one of those things. Mamet talks about the character as being you. Your idea’s, actions, etc. Yet he expresses a strong opinion against Method acting. I do see how you could say that you can only play something that’s already inside of you, similarly to the fact that you can only dream about something you’ve already seen. I just think that there might be characters so far away from you that this philosophy doesn’t really work on.

How could I not give this character first place? Kate Bishop is funny, talented and just really cool. This character made her first appearance in the MCU in 2021 in the Disney+ show Hawkeye in which she starred alongside titular star Jeremy Renner. Since the moment Hailee Steinfeld was announced as our Kate, she’s been a fan favorite.

In a show with big MCU characters like Yelena Belova and Clint Barton, Hailee managed to carry the show like a pro as a co-lead. Her character is witty and stands her own surrounded by literal heroes and villains.

I absolutely love her dynamic with Clint Barton. Their mentor/ protégé relationship gives me life and I love how Clint tries to shut her out to protect her at the start, but slowly warms up to her as the show continues.

Another dynamic I absolutely adore is between Kate Bishop and Yelena Belova. Their quips and bickering made for interesting scenes and dialogue. The both of them are so different in terms of experience, mindset and history but their pair together in this iconic duo.

Since 2021 Kate Bishop has not yet been seen in any other projects and there is no confirmed word of where she’ll appear next.

According to IMDb, she’s rumored to appear in the Avengers: The Kang Dynasty movie (2026), which is currently the only project in the database with her rumored appearance. There is reason to believe she’ll be featured in one of the following projects as well:

– Avengers: secret wars (release: may 7, 2027)

– Hawkeye season 2 (not a confirmed project)

– Echo miniseries (possible appearance)

Even though nothing has been confirmed yet, I’m sure we’ll see more of Kate Bishop very soon as she was a huge audience favorite since her first appearance and has a future with the Young Avengers.

She’s not sure about what she wants and makes rather rash decisions. She acts on impulse and later regrets her actions (or the text she sent ;)). She’s lonely but also doesn’t care enough to actually try and make new friends. She feels that very teenage-y feeling that she’s different and nobody gets her.

“You see, I don’t really have any friends, at the moment, and, to be completely honest with you, I’m not interested. At all.”

This movie was released in 2016 and features a cast with a very nice mix between known and unknown actors. In the lead we have Hailee Steinfeld at 19 years old playing Nadine. Her teacher, and go-to person to rant about her day, Mr. Bruner is played by Woody Harrelson. Nadine’s childhood best friend Krista is played by Haley Lu Richardson and her brother is portrayed by Blake Jenner.

My proudest moment is honestly that I watched this film on the literal edge of seventeen. I started watching in bed the night before my 18th birthday and it ended after midnight on my birthday. Still a really proud moment, the best decision I made, very satisfying. Anyways… On to the next character!

This movie is honestly so underrated in my opinion. Is it a little bit cringey? maybe. But I love it anyway. The cast is literally perfect: Hailee Steinfeld, Dove Cameron and Samuel L. Jackson; The best unexpected pairing.

The plot is anything you’d want from a movie: teenage special ops agent on a mission faking her own death and trying to live a highschool life, then having to reveal her identity to save everyone… I mean… I could literally watch every movie with a plot along these lines.

Megan Walsh grew up at ‘Prescott Academy’: a school that trains orphans from a young age to become special ops agents and be sent on missions. Megan, also called agent 83, was one of the top agents at Prescott, but she couldn’t help but miss a normal high school life. When a certain mission goes downhill, she sees the perfect opportunity to try and live a normal life. She goes through an exchange program to live with a host family and enrolls in a high school where she finds out that the ‘normal’ life comes with its own entire set of struggles.

Megan’s host sister Liz, played by Dove Cameron, isn’t immediately welcoming to her new sister. I love the way their relationship evolves over the course of the movie. Hailee Steinfeld and Dove Cameron are such an unexpected but nice duo.

The posters of this movie are great, but my favorite one is this one below.
Pitch Perfect is just so iconic and so rewatchable. I think the first movie might have been my favorite, but the second is close because of Hailee in it.

Her character Emily is the daughter of a former Barden Bella. Emily meets up with the Bella’s to ask them if she would be able to join the group and after finding out she’s a ‘Legacy’, they have to at least consider it. Emily is an innocent bright girl with a love for songwriting.

Fan opinions on Hailee’s character haven’t all been positive. After the success of Pitch Perfect 1, not everyone liked another Bella in the group. There is about a 10 year age difference between Hailee and some of the actresses, which made for an interesting dynamic. From a production point of view, it is understandable that the writers needed to plant a seed for the future of the Bella’s. The OG’s were getting a bit old to be playing university students, and Becca, the lead Bella played by Anna Kendrick, was already planning to leave the group. In the end, Pitch Perfect 3 fortunately still contained our OG’s + Hailee and wrapped up this trilogy really nicely.

Before we move on to the next character, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite performances in these films.

The exact cover I got is not available anymore (because I’ve had it for YEARS), but there are loads of very pretty editions.

What I like most about this journal is that it’s very sturdy. I’ve been using it since 2018 and it’s still in a really good condition. It also lays flat really well which makes it easy to work in. I love that the cover is a flexible plastic kind of layer which protects the journal a bit because I throw it in every bag to take with me and it still looks fine. There have even been times I accidentally spilled a drink over it and I was so lucky that it’s easy to wipe down.

The size of a page in my journal is 15,8 x 21,4 cm. In my opinion that’s really on the big side. There is a lot of space to fill and smaller pages would suffice. Especially since when you flip it open you have twice this area, which is more than A4. On the other hand, the extra space does come in handy sometimes. Like when I want to feature lots of characters from a TV-show, have some bigger pictures or make a little flip-feature on the page (or when I just have a lot to write about the topic). I will always make it work, but I wouldn’t say it’s necessary. Now that I’m used to it though, I probably won’t go smaller any time soon.

Depending on what you’re going to use your journal for, you might choose a different size. Are you going to use it as a travel journal? maybe go a bit smaller. Do you want a coffee table photo scrapbook? Go bigger! Just pick a size that’s practical for you.

The journal I’m using has a LOT of pages. I don’t think I’m even halfway and there is already quite a bit in it. I do like that it is starting to kind of bulge out haha. It looks very well used in a good way. As I mentioned, I have been using mine since 2018 but I do have to say that there have been years I barely did any pages. it’s not a consistent thing with me. I love that I can flip through it and see my life in phases, since I was 14. Every year I like to do an ‘update’ page where I talk about my life. You can also choose to fill one book every year (if you’re a bit more consistent than me) so you’ll have a sort of archive per year later!

I recommend getting one that has dotted inside pages (hence the ‘bullet’ in bullet journal). These brands are both really good quality. I’ve been using Moleskine as my agenda for YEARS now and don’t want anything else. So If you’re looking for something plain to maybe decorate yourself? Definitely take a look at those brands. These journals range in price anywhere between €12,- and €26,-.

Want to save some money, but still start your journaling journey? Don’t let the costs hold you back. Any notebook from a dollar store will work as a journal! As for the quality of these: as I mentioned before they have great coverage and bright color. The tip is very easy to control thickness with. The best fix for me is to either go over the paper fast, if I’m doing some simpler designs, or what I’ll usually do is draw my lettering on a separate piece of paper, cut it out and glue it onto my page.

They’re a basic need in my opinion. They can be used for drawing, letterling, outlining, writing and doodling and much more I’m sure. I have 3 sizes: 0.2 mm, 0.5 mm and 0.8 mm. My favorite by far is the tape roller. They are super cheap and leave minimal mess. You just roll the roller along the edges of anything you want to stick and press it onto the desired surface. It sticks really well and doesn’t cause any bumps under your paper. I highly recommend going to some dollar stores and searching for cheap, off-brand ones there because the branded ones tend to be ridiculously expensive.

The only thing I hate about these is that they run out quite fast and when they do, they’re useless and you have to throw the whole thing out. It feels like a big waste of plastic because I run out so fast. I know they have refillable options, but even then there is still a lot of plastic you’re throwing away. So all-in-all: the application and use is great, but it’s not really eco-friendly.

I have a WAY too big collection of Marvel stickers, but I’m proud of it.

For stickers, there is also such a huge market online. When I saw this book in a bookstore, I knew I had to get it. Obviously because I love Holly Jackson, but also the logline!:

“Eight hours, six friends, one sniper.”

Tell me that doesn’t make you super curious about this story. Holly Jackson managed to write 8 hours into 389 pages on basically one location and I’ve never once felt bored. The pacing is surprisingly fast. You know from the start how this book will end: five survive. But every chapter something comes to light that leaves you guessing who will be the one that dies, and when? and why?

Let’s start with the characters. Protagonist Red Kenny was a very interesting character to follow. She’s not exactly likable per se. During this book, we are mostly seeing inside of Red’s mind, and that mind of hers is very jambled and a little messed up, mostly because of trauma I assume. I love the way Holly Jackson writes out these weird thought processes like you’re following exactly what happens in the brain of a character. Red is kind of an unreliable protagonist. From the start, you know that we’re not getting the full picture, even from our lead. I like these kinds of protagonists that keep you on your toes.

Another character I’ll highlight is Oliver Lavoy. Maddie’s older brother. Even in this span of 8 hours, this character goes through so much development. At the beginning of the book he is the confident and reliable leader of the group, but as time passes and certain secrets come to light, the only thing Oliver cares about anymore is getting out of there alive himself, no matter what he’d have to sacrifice. There’s danger outside of the bus in the form of a sniper, but the danger inside of the bus is Oliver. He’s so incredibly unlikable and selfish it’s terrifying.

Maddie and Arthur were also two really interesting characters. With Maddie, there were hints from the start of the book that she had a secret, and man was the wait worth it. Arthur took some less expected twists though. That’s what I love about Holly Jackson: you think you know where it’s going, and then you’re kind of right, and then there’s four more layers to the story and a weird twist you could have never have imagined.

Reyna wasn’t really outstanding to me. She started out nice and caring but after her attempted sob story I just couldn’t take her seriously anymore, without spoiling anything, I just don’t like those kinds of people if you know what I mean.

Simon was very clearly intended as a comic relief and succeeded in that. I must admit he was funny, and made some smart suggestions. But I honestly still didn’t care for him that much. I think that’s the remarkable thing about this book: none of the characters are truly likable people and the dynamics between all those different personalities is what’s so interesting to read.

This book was written in third person pov and contains a lot of dialogue, which makes it easy to read. It’s a very binge-able book, especially since cliffhangers at the end of chapters make you want to read ‘just one more page’ every single time. There is a constant tense energy that Holly Jackson always seems to nail in her books. I’ve had a few of those moments where you just have to close the book for a second and stare forward in shock.

Although I mostly liked the pacing of the book, the ending felt a little rushed to me. The whole book we were given tiny pieces of information and then at the end, all the answers were thrown at us in a matter of a few pages. I liked the ending story wise, but pacing wise I think we could have gotten a little more time to process what was happening.

SAG-AFTRA is the union that represents artists in America. The acronym stands for ‘Screen Actors Guild- American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. It’s been named this since the 2012 fusion of the SAG and AFTRA which in turn were both created in the 1930s. The union consists of actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, dj’s, news writers, news directors, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists and other media professionals.

Why would one want to be part of such a union? Well the answer is simple really. While an actor wants to focus on acting and the art behind it, the union does all the business-y things on the back-end. In the words of SAG-AFTRA: they negotiate the best wages, working conditions, and health and pension benefits; preserving and expanding members’ work opportunities; vigorously enforcing our contracts; and protecting members against unauthorized use of their work.

About 160.000 artists are part of this union, among whom loads of big name actors and icons. The contradictory reality of this strike is that these big name actors will be able to reach the biggest audience and create the biggest impact, while they are also the ones least affected by the outfall. Smaller actors will be the ones without an income, job and possibility for growth for the period of the strike. Luckily many actors have already shown solidarity and support to their fellow SAG-AFTRA members as well as the Writers Guild of America, the WGA that has been striking for similar reasons since May 2nd of 2023. We’ve seen loads of actors posting to their social media for awareness and ceasing the promotion of current projects. The stars of ‘Oppenheimer’ walked out on their own premiere on the 13th of July (one day before the strike) after attending the red carpet.

Keep reading to see the impact of the strike for members of the union as well as non-members!

Last Thursday during a press conference, SAG-AFTRA officially announced the strike effective from Friday the 14th of July at 12:01 AM. In their bulletin they instruct all members to “Cease rendering all services and performing all work covered by the TV/Theatrical Contracts.”.

More than a week before that, on June 5th, SAG-AFTRA revealed that 97.91% of eligible voters within the union voted in favor of a strike even before the negotiations started. This means the members came to an almost unanimous agreement that, if needed, they would strike.

The strike pits SAG-AFTRA against the AMPTP, or in full: the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. This organization negotiates on behalf of producers and studios like Netflix, Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros and more.

These are the three biggest changes actors want to see:

1. Increased pay.

Acting is a job, like any other, that actors need to be able to earn their living with. Since the strike was announced, a lot of criticism from outsiders has been: “These actors are super rich people who don’t need even more money, what are they on about?”. However, the majority of SAG actors are working class actors auditioning their butt off and working a side job. Even if they book roles in considerably big projects, that doesn’t guarantee them good pay or their next employment. So yes, the top actors are getting paid enough. We’re fighting for better pay for everyone else.

2. Progress on residuals

What are residuals? This is the money actors get paid every time one of their projects is repeatedly used/shown again. This used to be a fairly easy concept: every time a television channel would show a movie, the actor would get paid a little bit. Same thing with tv commercials, films in theaters and physical media. Every time an actor’s work is used, they get a little bit of money (I can hear you thinking, what’s the difference between royalties and residuals? Well, they are generated in the same way, but the biggest difference is that residuals get paid through unions and royalties stay outside of this whole guild realm.)

If you want to know all the details about residuals, check out this presentation by SAG-AFTRA:

or check out the SAG-AFTRA website

Alright, so as I said, the process of paying residuals used to be pretty straightforward. Now, with streaming services taking up a big part of the market, the game has changed a little bit. Films and series are always at everyone’s disposal, and actors don’t get paid every time someone clicks on their show. The residual pay has decreased significantly and since this form of payment is the closest thing actors get to ‘passive income’, its has made earning a living as an actor challenging. The absence of residuals and royalties would require actors to work back to back projects, which is not realistic for non A-listers.

More on residuals and streaming services can be learned from this detailed post in the No Film School blog.

3. Protection against AI

Artificial Intelligence has, in theory, become undeniably capable of taking over parts of creative jobs, which is part of the reason the WGA is on strike: protection of the art form that is writing. In the acting world AI is forming a similar kind of threat. That is why the guild is asking for tighter regulations when it comes to tools that would be able to create digital composites of actors. They want to see safeguards regarding their likeness, voice and performance.

A very concerning message by the SAG chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland that has been circling the internet was that the AMPTP “… proposed that our background performers should be able to be scanned, get paid for one day’s pay, and their company should own that scan, their image, their likeness, and to be able to use it for the rest of eternity in any project they want, with no consent en no compensation”

Not only does this mean background actors would have no control about the use of their likeness, it would also get rid of all background jobs after one day of work.

The first obvious thing consumers will notice is projects getting delayed for an uncertain amount of time. The following productions announced stopping production already:

Deadpool 3

Mission impossible 8

Venom 3

Gladiator 2

Beetlejuice 2

Lilo & Stitch

Minecraft (yes, there was a movie being made with Jason Momoa)

Mortal Kombat 2

And this list will continue to grow very fast…

Basically all productions that still have to film with SAG-AFTRA actors, will have to wait. Even though the union is American, a lot of their members are international artists, which means not only productions in America are affected, but EVERYWHERE in the world where they cast SAG actors. Furthermore, as explained above, even non-members that still want a chance at ever becoming one, will probably lay off any of this work to avoid the risk of rejection by the union in the future.

The next thing you’ll notice is that actors will not promote their newest productions on social media. Some actors pushed out one last post on Thursday before midnight, but that was it. Actor Anthony Mackie even chose to make one last post about a production that’s not coming out until weeks, anticipating the long time the strike will take.

Got plans to attend any expo’s, conventions or panels any time soon? Don’t expect the actors to be there as this is also part of promotional and publicity activities that the actors can’t do.

The series ‘Heartstopper’, follows the events of the book series by Alice Oseman. The back of the first book has these iconic loglines that describe the story perfectly: ‘Boy meets boy, boys become friends, boys fall in love’. What more is there to tell? Just add a highschool, loads of texting, a propper full on gay crisis, friend drama and an anoying bully in the mix and you’ve got a pretty accurate idea of where we’re left in the story.

If you’ve read the books, you know what’s coming. This season, we follow our boys on their trip to paris. And judging by the hickey on Charlie’s neck in the promotional stills we got, their relationship developed a long way from the shy ‘Hi’s we got in season one.

This season, we’ll meet Nick’s older brother, who’ll stir up some trouble for our couple. We’ll also meet Sahar; a character we haven’t met yet in the series. This new friend, portrayed by Leila Khan will join our Paris squad to add some kindness and brain cells to the mix.

Another update that I’m personally thrilled about (and I’m sure many of you with me) is that they changed Tao’s hair!
1.LIGHTS

Good lighting is key in self tapes. That’s why one of the first things I invested in was some good lights. I bought these Neweer led panels and they’ve been working really well for me for the past YEARS. Neweer has a lot of different sets, but I chose this one because it has all I need: An option to set the lights to a more yellow or white tone and the option to dim the light. Since I use it for self tapes, I don’t really need the rgb colored options. But if you’re a filmmaker, they could be useful!

What I love most about having good lamps available is that I can literally film in the middle of the night when I’m in a time crunch!

Remember: If you’re not yet at a point where you can / want to invest in lamps, just make sure to film in daylight and close to a window. Just take it out of the case and it will pop up to a big backdrop. I personally got the one below. It has a green and a blue side. Looking back, I think I’d recommend one that has a gray and blue side. I never really use the green, and gray can also be used for self tapes. However, if you wanna have a green screen at home, this one is perfect.

In a previous post we talked about your ‘media kit’ and 3 things you should have ready and up to date at all times. In this post we’ll dive deeper into the process of filming self tapes.

I’ve been on both sides of the screen for this one. I’ve filmed and sent countless self tapes myself, but I’ve also cast a short film where I got to watch all the auditions that were sent to me by actors. I can’t wait to share all my tips, do’s and don’ts and insiders I’ve learned in these past few years.

Ok starting with the obvious, but most important thing: check. your. instructions. Casting directors might have specific requests for tapes like an eye line, a framing or certain information in your slate. make sure to follow the instructions and show them that you actually paid attention to what they said. Otherwise, how will they know you’ll be able to follow directions when you get the job?

Once you’ve learned your lines and you know what they want to see, It’s time to set up your shot. If there’s nothing in the briefing about the framing, follow these guidelines: The frame should show you approximately from the top of the chest up and you should have just a little room left at the top of your head. The camera should be positioned at eye-level. This is how I usually frame mine:

For eye lines, I always like to do a little test before I film my scene. If you’re playing a dialogue, you want to pick a spot next to, but not too close to the camera as your scene partner. The reason you want to look close to the camera is because you want the casting director to be able to see the emotions in your eyes, which is harder when you pick a spot too far away.

The background which you’re filming in front of should be plain and not distracting. Don’t overthink it too much though, a simple wall is fine. If you want to look a little more professional, you can opt for a blue or gray background. Stay tuned for the next post to see what gear I use.

Clothing wise, just like in a ‘live’ audition, just wear an outfit that your character could wear (but no costumes! If you want a clarification on this, let me know). Since we’ll usually only see the top half of your body on screen, make sure it looks good from the waist up. Refrain from wearing busy patterns or distracting prints. Hair and make-up should be as natural as possible and fitting to the character. Since the camera can dull some of your features you might want to wear some eyeliner and mascara to make sure your eyes pop and convey emotion.

Now, one question I get asked a lot is: “What do I do if my script says I should do *an action*?”. For example: your script may say that you’re walking through a busy city, or that your character is smoking, or you’re hugging someone. When filming your audition, you don’t have to literally recreate the setting. Better yet, you shouldn’t! Casting wants to see your acting skills, your looks and your choices. They don’t expect you to go and make the film yourself. You want to leave something to the imagination so their minds can fill it in how they want to see the setting. As for props: it’s totally okay if you use something different that poses as the item you’re supposed to have. I used a rolled up piece of paper as a cigarette once and it worked just fine.

One setting that might be an exception to my rule is when you’re supposed to be laying in bed. I’ve had several tapes where this was the case, and what I found that worked the best for me was lowering my backdrop to the ground, laying down a blanket and pillow and filming like that. That way, you can lay down and do the scene, but it still looks professional and clean.

Okay so you’ve finally set up your perfect shot and are ready to film. Now it’s time for your introduction: the slate. In this short video you’re gonna state some information relevant for the casting. Again, check the instructions! If there’s no specific requests, this is a good guideline: State your name, height and location. (stating your age is your own choice, as sometimes it can negatively influence your chances of getting a role if you’re not the right age range. As long as you look the job, you’re good. EXCEPT: if you’re a minor, you do have to state your age as there’s specific requirements needed on set to work with minors.) After this information, tell them just a little bit about your experience, career or yourself. The most important thing is that you want to show some personality during your slate, because this is the only time they’ll see it.

Once you’re happy with your slate, it’s time to get started on your scene. Hopefully you have your lines memorized by now and are ready to get into it. When doing your scene, my biggest tip is: make bold choices, don’t play the scene in the first way that comes to mind, but try to think of other interpretations that keep it interesting for casting directors to keep watching. Also: I know this can be so hard, but try not to get too caught up in every little detail so much that you’ll end up with 50 takes. Usually the first few ones will be more authentic and spontaneous anyway.

What do you do when you’re asked to film a scene with a dialogue or more different characters? You get a ‘reader’ aka, someone who reads all your scene partners lines off screen. The best option is to ask someone (sister, parent, partner, friend etc) to sit behind the camera and read while you play. That’s the best case scenario. But what if you can’t get anyone to help you ‘live’ at the moment? The second best option is trying to call someone that will read with you over the phone. Just place your phone behind the camera and do your scene. The downsides to this is that you won’t have as spontaneous interaction with your scene partner, and sometimes you’re asked to sign an nda before getting the scene, so you’re not allowed to send it to someone else. The ultimate last resort, when there is nobody to help you at all, is to leave your scene partners’ lines silent. You’ll have to learn every line in the script and react to them as if you can hear them talking. This is not really a preferred way to film the audition, so if you have the chance to film it with someone else, do it!

Now, before I get into the gear that will make your life easier, I just want to say: you don’t need anything but a phone to film your audition. Don’t let the prospect of needing to buy all kinds of gear scare you away. Start auditioning with just your phone, a plain wall and some daylight. In the end, all the casting directors really want to see is your acting ability.

Having said that, if you want to take your self tapes a step further and really give them that ‘I’m a professional working actor’ kind of look, some gear can really help you out. In the next post I’ll show you exactly what I use for my self tapes. For now a quick word of advice: the first thing I’d buy are some lights. Then, if you want to get that iconic blue background, buy a backdrop. And lastly: a tripod for your phone while filming makes life so much easier.

I hope this in depth guide answered some questions and will help you film auditions that get you roles. Let me know if it worked for you!

Stay tuned for next post where I’ll talk about my favorite gear!

Wow. What an amazingly fun story to read! Taylor Jenkins Reid has us dive into the 1970’s scene of rock n roll with this historical fiction. We follow the rise and fall of one of the most influential artists of rock in this documentary-interview style story. And even though the band is all made up, they’re giving us a backstage look into the very real world of music in the 70s.

Before starting this book I wasn’t so sure about the format Taylor Jenkins Reid chose to write in. She really gave herself a big challenge by choosing this interview-style storytelling where characters share their views on their past one by one, but it worked out great in my opinion. We got to know all the angles to the story, even if the characters sometimes contradicted each other in retelling what exactly happened.

This book was such an easy read. I went through it so fast because the story flowed really nicely and the pacing was pretty fast. The dynamics between the characters were part of what made it so interesting to read. It was the disagreements and conversations that made for the twists and turns in their careers.

Fun fact: this was the first book I ever annotated (well, I put sticky’s in it, I didn’t actually write in it). Never before did I feel the need to, but with this book, I just had so many of those moments where I was like: “omg that’s such a great quote, I gotta remember it”. This book contains many good views on life and love. I still think a lot about Camilla and the way she talks about love and relationships. Billy has some great quotes too. The following paragraph quoted from him is one of my favorites in the book because I think it applies to real life so much:

“You have these lines you won’t cross. But then you cross them. And suddenly you possess the very dangerous information that you can break the rule and the world won’t instantly come to an end. You’ve taken a big black, bold line and you’ve made it a little bit gray. And now every time you cross it again, it just gets grayer and grayer until one day you look around and think, there was a line here once I think.”

Reid had taken the subject of addiction and showed it from multiple sides, the destruction, the glamorization, the suffering, the culture and most beautifully, the life after recovery.

If there’s one thing I absolutely love in books is passionate artists. The way they talk about their creative process and urge to tell stories is just really inspiring to me. This book is so full of passion and also great quotes about artistry. One thing Billy said that stuck with me was: “[…] Which is what we all want from art, isn’t it? When someone pins down something that feels like it lives inside of us? Takes a piece of your heart and shows it to you?”

Of course it wouldn’t be a Taylor Jenkins Reid book without strong-willed female characters and lots of feminism. I love how her books aren’t necessarily screaming feminism or making it a big part of the plot. It’s just inherently there like it’s supposed to be. Karen is such a powerhouse and Camilla is a whole other level of confident. Daisy does what she wants and won’t be told no. Her desire for self-expression reflects in her iconic quote: “I am not a muse. I am the somebody.”

I’m gonna be honest. There is one thing I struggled with a bit in this book, which was the amount of characters. There were so many side characters that kept coming back that I lost track of who everyone was at some point. Even within the band I kept confusing half of the boys with each other. Maybe that’s just my own memory though, because I’m not the best with names.

To conclude this review, I’d like to say: GET THIS BOOK. I feel like this is one of those stories you just have to have read. It shines a little light on part of the world you haven’t seen yet and it stays with you for a long time.
The acting industry is moving fast. Casting directors want to be able to see if you’re the right person for the job in a matter of minutes (seconds even!). That’s why having these 3 things ready to go will make you look professional and increase your chances of booking a job.

In this article, I’ll give an overview of the 3 things that you should keep up to date at all times. Keep an eye out for the next couple of posts that will go in depth about how to create the specific components, tips, tricks and rules.

Your headshot

Your headshot is your first impression!! It’s the first thing casting directors see of you and it’s what can grab their attention in a big sea of faces.

Ideally you want to have a few options showing different sides of you. So that you can always pick a headshot that fits the role or project you’re auditioning for. If you don’t have the possibility to have multiple ‘personality’ shots, at least make sure you have a ‘commercial’ one and a ‘dramatic’ one.

The photos should be vertical, and approximately 8:10 in size. When a casting call asks you to send a headshot, make sure you send one (maaaaaybe two of you really think it adds something). Don’t send them your whole photoshoot.

Another thing that is good to have on hand is a full body shot. Most of the time you’ll be asked to send this in too. Make sure this picture gives a general idea of your body type. You don’t have to go all model, skinny jeans and a top, but just don’t go oversized everything.

Your resume

Your resume should give anyone reading it a quick overview of what experience you have. In case of commercial bookings, production always wants to know whether you’ve worked with competing brands before.

Generally your CV includes:

Some information about you (height, size, phone/email )

Previous roles and projects

Training

Any special skills / languages spoken

You don’t wanna make your resume too funky because the whole point of it is for it to be clear and professional. One easy way to do this is with Canva.

Your showreel

Your showreel is something you build along the way. All scenes of previous projects that you think show off your acting ability well can go in here. You want to show your range and versatility here.

When you’re just staring out and casting wants to see some material, it’s a good idea to have a monologue or scene properly filmed like a self tape (I’ll go more in detail about self tapes in a future post). This way you still have something to show for yourself.

As a starting actor, a good length of showreel is about 1-3 minutes, you don’t want to make it too long because most casting directors will only watch the first bits anyway. (So also make sure you’re strongest bits are at the start)

When you have gathered quite some material from different projects (yay, good job!), it might be a good idea to split your reels. You can make a separate ‘commercial reel’ and ‘dramatic reel’ for different casting calls, or go even further and split your dramatic reel into multiple genres.

Now as for how to get people to see it: productions generally don’t like to be sent download links to showreels because they’d take up too much unnecessary space. Instead, post your video on Vimeo or YouTube as a private video so you can share the link to it anytime.

Have any questions or suggestions? As always: don’t hesitate to let me know. And as mentioned before, I’ll go in depth about self tape auditions and the 3 components listed here in later posts to explain how to make them look as professional as possible.
